1 Goal to know Me

Part of the User Manual Series where I give some brief overviews of the media, experiences, thoughts that help make me...me. Released hourly on my 32nd birthday.

In 4th year of school we had to write an essay. It was to be a continuation of a story that we had read in class. I don't remember what the story was but I recall writing a story that focused on the failure of the character to grow beyond his abusive family. He had passed by a refinery every day, hoping to do something more but as his time ran out the option to give in became more enticing. There was an image of a single white rose among an ocean of red that I still remember writing about.

I was really nervous to read it out and I struggled to get through it. I'm sure it wasn't anything special but the teacher really praised it. It's important to encourage kids in this way and it shows, I literally still think about that encouragement almost 20 years later.

A big part of the reason why I started writing on this website in general was to build a habit of writing regularly. To be an author has always been, and continues to be, my goal.

Whether that is through a traditional method of publishing or through self-publishing remains to be seen but the truth is I would be happy either way. My primary goal is to hold a copy of a book written by me. I want it to sit on the shelf next to my favourite authors. I want it to be for me more than for anybody else.

My progress has been mixed over the years. A lot of drafts have been scrapped. Some have been significant in size. I fell off a bit over the pandemic and I decided last year that I should start a blog so that I get in the habit of regular writing. This has been helpful and I have a really strong outline for my next project as a result of building these habits.

One day, I hope to be able to hold that book in my hand. Maybe I can table at a local convention as well for the experience of it.

I'll keep at it.
