Movie Thoughts: Unpregnant (2020)

I like a teen movie - a coming-of-age story with the ridiculous naivety of youth. This movie ticks all those boxes. It has a good cast, chill soundtrack and it is continuously important to highlight stories about young women exercising their autonomy and freedom to make informed decisions for themselves. Life is complicated and its important to show different feelings, choices and cultures.

My only gripe, and the reason I won't be rushing back to this one, is that I felt that the severity of the situation wasn't fully addressed. Her boyfriend was a stalker - and the issue with the condom felt it could have been intentional given his other actions - who threatened her with blackmail and essentially aided a kidnapping. Kevin should be in jail and in a movie that showed some real narrative punch with familial versus found family relationships, I wish they had a stronger message in how we should feel about manipulative young men like this.

I will add, it has a fantastic cameo and it did give some good laughs. Maybe the importance of its theme hits harder for its target demographic. Well worth a watch.
