Strange Voyages

There is No Antimemetics Division

This might be the first horror book I've ever read. I chose a doozy as the author here explores concepts that conjure such existential dread that I'm not sure I will ever read a horror book that manages to top the sheer scale of idea that QNTM tackles here.

QNTM jumps around and uses some different styles of writing here to lay the ground works for a grand mystery. Perhaps more detective novel than outright horror at times. It really pulled me in and I made my way through this one very quickly in part because I needed to know, for my own psyche at times, that the terrifying idea of the Antimemetics Divisions enemies could be overcome.

A stand-out aspect of this was the capability of all involved. I'm not a huge fan of horror as a genre - in film I haven't gone far beyond the teen slasher type of movies - so it was very interesting to consume horror where the protagonists were not making stupid mistakes. There is a particular sequence with a character dealing with a monster that had taken out many others before him, it was incredible to see how he reacted to an emerging crisis with his experience and training. A very unique battle of wits.

Overall this is a very strange book but I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for something different. I believe this started life as an SCP-related novel which, as someone who is only vaguely aware of SCP, didn't have much impact on my enjoyment of the book but may give you extra reason to dive in if you are aware of that project.
